Sugar producing countries like India and Pakistan are becoming more mechanised and therefore more efficient.
Queensland agricultural consultant Brian Robotham has been overseas assisting with the change.
He says increased production in places like India shouldn't be a threat to Australia.
"I think a lot of those are not even self-sufficient in sugar, and as the populations become better educated and earn more money, they'll drink more soft drink and more processed food and their demand for sugar will increase."
