The sugar harvest in Mexico has begun this month at 17 of the country's 57 sugar mills, with forecasts for the 2010-2011 production still close to 5.3 million tons, up from 4.8 million the previous season, sugar officials said Wednesday.
The National Committee for the Sustainable Development of Sugarcane said in a press release the harvest will be sufficient to meet domestic demand, which officials expect to be below five million tons.
Sugar production has been increasing with the use of fertilizer, said Juan Cortina, president of the National Chamber for the Sugar Industry. Due to a liquidity crisis in the sugar industry during 2007 and 2008, sugar producers weren't able to properly fertilize their fields, leading to low harvests for a couple of years, he said.
