The use of ethanol based fuels are on an upswing. Fuel stations are selling E-10, E-15, and E-85 blended fuels and are more prevalent than ever before. The good news is flex fuel vehicles can handle them. The bad news is most outboards have a very tough time with them. Increased water vapor means more chance for corrosion of engine parts. Hotter cylinder temperatures can also result causing undue wear and friction that are harmful to your outboard. Gaskets and rubber parts can also be adversely impacted.

There are several new products being touted in the marketplace to help eliminate this problem but only one that has a team of chemists and scientists behind it and over 40 years of experience with performance engines...that is Lucas Oil. Their new Safeguard Ethanol treatment eliminates all of the harmful effects of these type of fuels and safeguards angler and boater concerns regarding their outboards.

We have used it in our boats and tow vehicle. Because it has the Lucas brand on the bottle we trust it but right from the git-go we have saved cost at the pump. We can buy E-85 for our truck at a lower price per gallon, add Safeguard and fuel costs are lowered plus we get the peace of mind of knowing that our engine is running safe. For our outboards, where blended mixtures of 10% ethanol is the norm, but higher amounts are possible, we again get peace of mind knowing they will continue to run like new with Safeguard added. Believe it or not we have noticed a 1-2 mpg increase using Safeguard in our tow vehicles. A side benefit is Safeguard contains oxidation Inhibitors to stabilize fuel and prevents varnish & gum formation in ethanol & gasoline.

Gas tanks that may have gas setting in them for longer periods of time are also great candidates for SafeGuard Ethanol Treatment. One bottle treats up to 80 gallons of fuel. Each bottle is 16.8 ounces. One ounce treats 5 gallons of fuel.
