THE Fiji Sugar Corporation has applied to the Sugar Industry Tribunal for an end-of-crush date for Ba's Rarawai Mill.Spokesman Samuela Railoa said they were keen to cease crushing on December 31 because of escalating costs and low sugar content in the crop.
"Both the growers and the FSC will be called to the tribunal this week to finalise the end-of-crush date," he said.
Crushing at Lautoka ended on December 3 with 545,431 tonnes of cane crushed producing close to 45,000 tonnes of sugar. This is a huge reduction compared to last year when 743,625 tonnes of cane were crushed producing 50,114 tonnes of sugar.
The third sugar shipment departed Lautoka last Thursday with 26,361 tonnes bound for the European market.
The last shipment is scheduled for December 24.
