Belize Sugar Production Up In 2009

The 2009 sugar cane crop will come to a close on Friday June 5. This is the last day that the Belize Sugar Industry factory will be receiving sugar cane for milling.

The factory reports that the gates will be closed at 6p.m. and that will mark the close of the sugar cane season for 2009. BSI announces that it will be receiving cane from 6a.m. to 10p.m. from Tuesday to Thursday and from 6a.m. to 6p.m. on Friday.

Total production so far stands at 92 thousand tons of sugar; this is a marked increase from 2008 when production was at 78 thousand tons.

While the production is higher this year, the season still falls below the normal crop which sees 110 thousand tons produced. Reports indicate that the cane quality this year was better than it was last year; however, there was less sugar cane produced. The quality of the cane delivered made for better sugar extraction providing the greater production.
