Money continues to be invested in the sugar industry, with MSF Sugar announcing a $42 million upgrade to one of its mills.

The Atherton Tablelands mill has only been able to partially refine sugar until this point.

But Mike Barry, the CEO of MSF Sugar, says that will now change.

"Look, at the moment it simply crushes the cane and produces the syrup and that's all that is done. And that syrup is put in tankers and moved down to the coastal mills," he said.

"So what we're looking to do now is not only increase crushing capacity, but install first stage back end, so we'll be producing raw sugar up there."
