A proposed $425 million sugar ethanol plant in north Queensland is set to go ahead after getting council and State Government approval.

In the past several months, the Hinchinbrook Shire Council has been preparing reports for the Government on the impact of the NQ Bio-Energy plant on local roads and traffic.

The plant will produce about 335,000 tonnes of sugar a year and generate between 80 to 85 megawatts of green power.

Hinchinbrook Mayor Pino Giandomenico says 400 jobs will be directly needed for construction and dozens more for cane growers to run local farms which supply the plant.

"What we need now is more land to go into cane so it increases the amount of cane grown in the district, so we don't lose jobs from one mill and go to the other, the direct impact is more jobs," he said.
