Sugar production in the first two months of 2011-12 (October-September) season has grown 17 per cent over the corresponding period last year due to higher output in Uttar Pradesh.

The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said 21.62 lakh tonnes have been produced till November 30, 2011 compared with 18.46 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period last year. This is despite fewer mills commencing their crushing operations during the period this year.

An estimated 350 mills were operational as on November 30 this year against 355 last year, ISMA said in a statement.

Uttar Pradesh has registered a significant jump in sugar production at 5.30 lakh tonnes till November 30 this year against 1.83 lakh tonnes in the corresponding month last year as crushing has commenced on a full swing in the state.
