PUNE: Dr. BC Gupta, secretary, ministry of food and public distribution, government of India, has been elected the chairman of International Sugar Organisation (ISO) for one year in 2012. The election was unanimous when all members present in the 40th Council meeting in London on 2nd December 2011 agreed to Dr Gupta's election, proposed by the European Commission.

Dr Gupta, who is from the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and belongs to the 1975 batch from Punjab cadre had taken over as food secretary in the government of India, in November 2010, was also elected as the vice chairman of ISO for 2011 last year in the Council meeting of ISO in London in December 2010. The ISO consists of 86 member countries from all over the world. It is the most important international body on sugar and ethanol world over.

India has been accorded the honour of hosting the next administrative and Council meeting of ISO in New Delhi in April 2012. ""With over 95% of sugar production as also export and import of sugar in the world coming out of the member countries, the April 2012 meeting in New Delhi will give an excellent opportunity to Indian sugar industry, cane farmers as well as policy makers to interact with major policy makers, sugar producers and traders from all over the world. There would be a seminar during the meeting which would be organised by the ministry of food and public distribution,"" stated a release from Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA).
