In Teeside, the possible reopening of the Ensus ethanol plant may become a reality. Ian Swales, MP has reportely stated that ministers are ready to unveil help for firms like Ensus. Swales stated at a conference held in Birmingham, “I’m confident, having met with transport minister Norman Baker, that the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation will be made mandatory.”

Europe’s largest ethanol plant in Wilton on Teeside, capable of processing 1 million metric tons of wheat annually, originally shut due to lower-than-expected demand in Europe brought about by slow uptake of ethanol blending mandates across the 27 member states as well as cheap imports from the US.
