High fructose corn syrup is trying to rebrand itself as "corn sugar," and the sugar industry is not having it: three major sugar companies are asking a US District Court to put a stop to the ad campaign, calling it false advertising.

Corn refiners had petitioned the FDA to change high fructose corn syrup to "corn sugar" on food labels, which can be a lengthy process. But that didn't stop them from running ads about the name change right away! The "corn sugar" campaign kicked off last Fall, and the corn refiners have also been fighting the image that HFCS is responsible for the obesity epidemic (and an accompanying slump in consumption) through SNL-parodied commercials.
