sugar news

Belarusians are sweeping away sugar and sunflower oil from grocery shelves. The boom is related to the reports about rising costs for these food products.

According to forecasts, sugar is to cost 8,000 Br, sunflower oil – 11,000 Br. The Belarusian state concern of food industry Belgospischeprom representatives say that they do not plan to raise prices for sugar and oil in the next three months. However, on the condition of anonymity some sources state that price for at least one of these products is going to be raised.

Yesterday, at 10 p.m., an hour before closing time of one of the shops in Zyalyony Luh district, the shelves with sunflower oil were almost empty, TUT.BY visitor Anna writes.

“When I came near the shelf with sunflower oil, there was very little oil there. A man and a woman were choosing something for a long time, and finally they took three different bottles and left. I managed to make a picture of the half-empty shelf with my mobile phone. A shop assistant immediately came with a cart and filled the shelf. All the three persons standing in the queue with me had sunflower oil in their carts,” Anna said.

After 10 p.m. oil was brought into the shopping area in entire boxes, Maryja tells.

Alyaksandr Kishkurna, a visitor of the website, informs about possible advance of sugar price.

“Yesterday, on April 7, I came into the shop on my way back home from my office, and I saw people shovelling up sugar, they were taking as much as they were able to carry. I was not silly, I also bought 5 kilograms. They say it will cost 8,000 Br.”

A user Maxim tells his story:

“In Hyppo hypermarket in Zhukouski Street yesterday I saw myself how people were buying sugar and oat flakes. It was about 9.30 p.m. at about 8 p.m. my wife saw in “Chkalauski” shop in Zhukouski Street how people were buying up sugar. One of the women there was enthusiastically carrying about 20 packages of sugar in her cart.”

“There was no panic in “Mahilyouski” shop at 9 a.m. there were 3 kinds of sunflower oil, the cheapest at 6,670 Br, and sugar at 3,660 aplenty,” Maryna told.

“We have oil delivered at 11,000”

A worker of a shop in Serabranka district told to TUT.BY on the condition of anonymity that they have sunflower oil delivered “at 11,000 Br” already. When the remainder would be sold out, the goods at a new price are to appear on the shelves allegedly.

At the same time, one of representatives of vegetable oil manufacturing enterprise received an avalanche of phone calls with a request “to give oil”. TUT.BY has been told about that by him on the condition of anonymity. As said by him, the new cost of oil in different trade networks of Minsk is to be from 9,000 Br to 11,000 Br.

TUT.BY received one more anonymous comment at a Belarusian enterprise where sunflower oil is manufactured. The price hike was confirmed there, and it was rationalized by raised raw materials costs and deficit of currency. The source refused to tell the terms and the new price for oil.

Official sources: No raise in sugar and oil prices is planned

The Belarusian state concern of food industry Belgospischeprom has stated that in the next three months sugar costs are not to be revised.

“As of April 1, 2011, sugar in stock of sugar industry enterprises is 180,000 tons, which is enough to meet the demands of the home market until the sugar beet processing season in 2011,” a representative of the concern said.

The Economy Ministry has confirmed that there will be no sugar price hike in the nearest future. In order to increase the price for sugar, the ministry should receive an address with economic justification of the price hike. So far such an address had not been received.

Vegetable oil cost is not planned to be increased, Belgospischeprom noted.
