Government intervened at the right time to save the sugar industry from collapsing says the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

Bainimarama told FBC NEWS past politicians were only barking and no one took the initiative to visit the sugar mills and stop the wastage of sugar occurring for the past decade especially in the Lautoka Mill.

Bainimarama says he found out while visiting the sugar mill last month – that sugar was flowing straight to sea while being crushed.

He says all loans by FSC –was guaranteed by government and now government has taken over all

FSC debts to save it from collapsing. This - Bainimarama says - could badly affect Fiji’s economy.

He says those that have been making comments on the revival of the sugar industry don’t know what they are talking about as they did nothing to salvage the industry.
