Linde recycles CO₂ from New York ethanol plant

Linde North America, a subsidiary of the Linde Group, has begun set-up of a new carbon-dioxide (CO₂) plant in New York.

The latest facility is based in Fulton and will turn ethanol to CO₂ at a daily capacity of 600 tonnes. It will be located at the Sunoco ethanol plant, housed in a former brewery in the Riverview Business Park which lies about 25 miles north of Syracuse.

Pat Murphy, President of Linde North America, said, “This plant enhances our ability to provide a reliable supply of CO₂ to our customers in the Northeast. Linde now has the largest CO₂ production capacity in the region – over 1200 tons a day.”

The Sunoco’s plant is the largest ethanol plant in the Northeast, which uses around 41m bushels of corn in the annual production of approximately 100m gallon of ethanol. Michael McKee, General Manager of Sunoco’s ethanol business, remarked, “Sunoco’s partnership with Linde is good for the environment and the local economy. Capturing, processing, and re-selling CO₂ will mean more jobs for the local economy and further position our ethanol facility as one of the nation’s cleanest and greenest.”

The new works will provide CO₂ for use in food, beverage and chemical manufacturing, by capturing CO₂ emissions from the ethanol plant that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere. Linde then purifies and liquefies the gas for subsequent sale to customers located throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New England.
