NEW DELHI, - Sugar output in India's biggest producing state is seen at 6.6 million tonnes in the year to September, the government said on Tuesday, 8.2 percent higher than the industry forecast.
Industry officials had earlier estimated that mills in the western Maharashtra state will produce 6.1 million tonnes of sugar in the current year, as compared with around 4.6 million tonnes in 2008/09.
The state produced 5.9 million tonnes of sugar in the first six months of the season from October, Junior Farm Minister K.V. Thomas said in a written reply to parliament on Tuesday.
Earlier this month, Farm Minister Sharad Pawar said sugar production in India, the world's top consumer and the biggest producer behind Brazil, was expected at 18.0-18.1 million tonnes due to higher yields.
A 44-percent drop in output to 14.7 million tonnes in 2008/09 made India a large importer, helping New York-traded raws SBK0 touch a 29-year peak in February.
