The future of the sugar industry in Fiji is now dependent on the availability of an adequate cane supply.

The Fiji Sugar Corporation chief executive officer Deo Saran said they have already invested heavily in upgrading the sugar mills and their attention will now focus on expanding cane supply.

“Obviously there are lot of initiative being jointly put by government, NLTB and all the institutions in the sugar industry to boost up cane production and one can say that once the required cane production is achieved and the mill upgrade program we have taken, obviously the sugar industry would be on a sound footing.”

FSC is still carrying out upgrades at all its sugar mills and its expected to be finished before the start of the 2010 harvesting season.
