The government will ensure that by next year the sugar industry becomes a profitable enterprise in Kenya.
The Minister for Agriculture William Ruto says by next year all state owned sugar factories would be privatized.
Ruto made the remarks Sunday during a funds drive at Kakamega Anglican Church.
The Minister said already the government is enforcing his directive that all sugar factories in the country pay farmers Sh. 3000 and above per every ton of sugar cane delivered to the factory.
Ruto also assured farmers that the government will avail affordable fertilizer to farmers countrywide to ensure adequate food and cash crops.
He said Kenya has tremendous potential in agriculture that if unlocked could make it among the developed countries in the world.
