The Government of Canada will invest up to CA$77.75m (US$73.8m) over seven years to support ethanol production in Saskatchewan. The funding will go to Terra Grain Fuels’ ethanol plant in Belle Plaine under the ecoENERGY for Biofuels programme.
Natural Resources Canada claims that grain-based ethanol can cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 40% on a lifecycle basis compared to gasoline. The Belle Plaine plant has capacity for 150 million litres of ethanol a year, along with 163,800 tonnes of dried distillers grain.
“Terra Grain Fuels is very pleased to be a qualified member of the ecoEnergy Biofuels programme and encouraged by the government’s commitment to the emerging renewable fuel industry,” said Tim LaFrance, president of Terra Grain Fuels.
The Government of Canada will invest up to CA$1.5bn over nine years through the ecoENERGY for Biofuels programme.
