The Ministry of Plantation Industry pays attention to increase the sugar production in the country. A six-year plan has been drawn in this regard. The sugar cane will be cultivated in another 96 thousand acres during this period in the areas of Kahatagasdigiliya, Uva Wellassa and Bibile.
The main target of the programme is to fulfil the local sugar requirement by 50 percent. At present, the capacity of sugar production in sugar factories in Sevanagala and Pelwatte is only 7 percent for the local demand. The reason for the lower production capacity is due to the non-productive land and, not using the alternative methods of cultivation.
