Four ships carrying a total of 108,300 tonnes of raw sugar from Brazil are scheduled to arrive at Indian ports in May, traders and industry sources said on Tuesday.

India's top refiner, Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd, which operates a sugar refinery in eastern port city of Haldia, was likely to receive a cargo of 23,300 tonnes of raws on the east coast and 45,000 tonnes on the west coast on May 7, traders said.

One cargo of 20,000 tonnes of raws for Simbhaoli Sugars Ltd, a leading producer that has mills in northern India, was expected to arrive at the western port of Kandla on May 15, they said.

The Indian arm of a global trading firm was likely to receive a cargo of 20,000 tonnes at Kandla on May 15, the sources said.

After importing about 1 million tonnes of raws since mid-February, purchases by India have slowed down in the past 15 days as mills fear the government could force them to sell 10 percent of their output below cost.

Louis Dreyfus, Cargill, ED & F Man, Bunge and Sucden are the major suppliers of raw sugar to India.
