Plight of sugar industry, politics tackled in Macau trip

BACOLOD CITY -- Fourth District Congressman Jeffrey Ferrer, one of the officials who joined the trip to Macau, China, admitted that politics was among the things they discussed, but they also talked about the plight of the sugar industry.

Ferrer said most of the discussion centered on the plan of inviting investors for fertilizer plant as a support to the growing sugar industry.

They had an appointment with various stakeholders in Macau who listened to their appeal.

“I hope it will be realized soon because the high prices of fertilizers are really the problems of local planters here in the province,” he added.

With regards to politics, Ferrer said the mayors and congressmen of Negros Occidental are now waiting for the decision of their “elders” as to who will be their bet for governor in 2010.

“The decision is up for what we called our ‘elders’, meaning between Governor Isidro Zayco and Sagay City Mayor Freddie Marañon,” he stressed.

They should iron it out or talk it by themselves or else their superiors would do the decision if they do not make it.

In a party policy according to Ferrer, there is this so called the equity of the incumbent which is being held by Zayco.

Zayco earlier said he will announce his decision whether he will seek a fresh mandate for governor, or run for another position in the May 2010 elections by September.

“I really appreciate the congressmen and mayors’ effort to convince me to run for the top post in the province but as of today, I haven’t decided yet,” Zayco said.

Zayco announced earlier that it is also possible that he may seek the mayoral post in Kabankalan City since his brother who sits as mayor, Pedro Zayco cannot run anymore because his term will expire.

“I think in making any decision whether to run for governor, I need to evaluate my performance first in the last two years and consider the sentiments of the people,” Zayco said.

Reports have it that if Zayco will decide not to run for governor, Sagay City Mayor Alfredo Marañon Jr. will be the first priority.
