THE Fiji Sugar Commission will meet later this month to finalise the details of its winding down process.

This will be in line with the interim Government's directive to close the commission and distribute its responsibilities among sugar industry bodies.

Commission chairman John May said a meeting next Tuesday would address the issue.

Mr May said all issues relating to the industry would be considered at the meeting.

He had said that all the details would be considered and approved at the commission's last meeting.

"As there is a great deal of work required before the start of the harvesting season in the organisation of the memorandum of gang agreements for some 1900 harvesting gangs, it is expected that the transfer of some of the functions of the commission will take several months after March 31."

Mr May said it was likely the commission would cease to function after the start of harvesting season and the target date for this would be the end of June.
