The Fiji Sugar Marketing Authority believes this year will be the year where Fiji will see the result of the price cuts in sugar.

Chief executive officer Viliame Savou said that they are forecasting $166 million in terms of export earnings into the country.

Savou said the Authority is looking at fulfilling their export requirements to the European Union and the program will start in July where a cargo of sugar per month will be shipped to the EU preferential market.

He said the biggest challenge for the sugar industry has been the price reduction in the preferential market, however, he said the industry has a future provided the production costs are minimized and the industry should not be left to die.
