A $300 million USD sugar refinery is scheduled to be built at Al Ramash in the central Sinnar state of Sudan. The Sudanese government revealed after signing an agreement with Bin Omeir Holding Group, an Arab investment private group based in Abu Dhabi.
The plant would produce 100,000 tonnes of sugar and 20 million litres of ethanol a year in the White Nile province, 300 kilometres south of Khartoum, the biggest country producer. The parties have also agreed to expand the production of the plant in the future.
Kennana Sugar Company for Engineering and Services, Sudan's largest sugar producer and one of the biggest in the world, with an annual capacity of 365,000 metric tons of first grade sugar, has prepared the feasibility study while The Indian Sugar and General Export and Import Corporation (ISGIC) has designated to supply the equipment for the project.
Sudan is the third largest producer of sugar in Africa, after South Africa and Egypt. The country has five large scale sugar refining factories with a total capacity of 670 thousand metric tons of refined sugar. With the high potential for expanding the sugar industry, the government plans the enlargement of crop fields near the Nile River in the near future.
