The Ministry of Sugar is working on plans to try and move away from raw sugar exports to exporting refined white sugar and is in close consultations with our officials in Brussels in trying to secure markets for the product.
Interim Minister Joketani Cokanasiga said there is a high demand for refined sugar and they plan to take advantage of the situation.
Cokanasiga said this could help get the sugar industry back on its feet as EU preferential prices continue to be phased out.
Meanwhile, Cokanasiga said they are also working with the Fiji Embassy in Washington to secure further access for Fiji sugar to the US market after the sugar sectors Caribbean countries suffered setbacks with successive cyclones earlier this year.
