Chairman of the Sugar Industry Authority, Ambassador Derrick Heaven says he is fully behind the Government's plans to divest the sugar industry.

Ambassador Heaven says he believes the Government is unable to manage a viable industry.

According to Ambassador Heaven, it is even harder for cane farmers to survive with the final tranche of the 36% reduction in cane prices slated to take effect this crop year.

"If I were asked that question 30 years ago, my answer would be that Government should own it but right now, I'm one of the most enthusiastic supporters of divestment, why ... I don't think Government can run a sugar industry ... I don't think Government is structured to make the decisions that have to be made on a timely basis."

The Sugar Industry Authority Chairman said sugar survival is going to require a significant inflow of capital to correct some of the industry problems which have deteriorated over the years.

According to Ambassador Heaven, while the divestment process has gone on for too long, it is not easy to negotiate the sale of six Government owned entities with only one bidder.

He said this occurred because those persons who had been short listed failed to submit their bids within the required period.

Ambassador Heaven was speaking at the Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce Annual Award function at Negril Hills Golf Club on Sunday, where several sugar cane producers were also present.

Five persons were awarded for outstanding achievements in the categories of Business, Community Development, Youth Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Leadership.
